Book & Film

A book and a documentary film, in preparation for a March 2027 launch.

THE BOOK

Still in the Skies will be a visually rich narrative biography of Lt Col Vivek Mundkur, told against the long history of humanity's relationship with flight.

It is not a technical book. It is not a military biography. It is the story of a man who, for five decades, has lived close to the sky — building, flying, failing, rebuilding, and flying again. It places that story within the larger arc of human flight: from the myths of ancient India and

Greece, through Leonardo da Vinci, George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, the Wright Brothers, and Francis Rogallo, to the moment a young Army officer in Pune read a magazine and wrote to America for five-dollar drawings.

The book is written for a broad Indian and international readership. It is designed to be both an inspiring story and a serious piece of aviation history — one that has never been properly told from an Indian perspective.

Target publication: March 2027

Publisher route: Both trade publisher and self-publishing options are being pursued in parallel. Section

THE DOCUMENTARY FILM

A short documentary film — also titled Still in the Skies — is being produced alongside the book.

The film covers the full arc of Vivek's story: from his first flight at the Dighi Hills in 1976 to his return to flying at 76, to the planned solo paraglider flight in November 2026 — which will be the film's climactic sequence.

The film will be screened at the book launch in Pune and will form the basis of the Instagram and social media campaign. It is being produced by Ratheesh, in close collaboration with the book team.

Note: A separate documentary film, Air Risers, directed by Bidit Roy (Bluebird Moving Stories), was produced in 2025–26 and covers Vivek's return to flying at 76. It was selected for the Doc WIP Lab at NFDC Doc Film Bazaar 2024 and has been screened privately. Still in the Skies is a distinct project — a book-linked documentary with a different scope and purpose

 THE TEAM

The project is led by Manu (editorial development, narrative structure, writing, and strategic oversight) and Ratheesh (photography, cinematography, archive digitisation, and visual

production), in close collaboration with Lt Col Vivek Mundkur as principal subject, archive owner, and factual authority.
